How to play a real-life outfit challenge
You can try a styling round with friends using clothes you already own. Agree on the rules before anyone gets dressed so everyone has the same brief. Keep the challenge focused on the styling choices, with room for different tastes and budgets.
- Choose one theme. Try monochrome, off-duty layers, or a color everyone has in their closet.
- Set a time limit that works for your group. Leave enough time to put the outfit together and take a photo.
- Style a complete look. Think about the shoes, layers, and accessories as well as the main piece.
- Show the outfit clearly. Use a simple background and include the full silhouette in the frame.
- Vote on the theme, styling, and creativity. Keep comments about the clothes and give every outfit a fair look.
Take the challenge into Swathe
Swathe gives the community a new styling prompt each day. Build a look around the prompt, photograph it, and post your fit for that edition. The posting flow includes face blur on your device, so you can adjust the blur before uploading your photo.
Then rate other outfits with stars. Five ratings unlock the crowd score on your own look. Ratings feed the leaderboards, giving you a way to follow how your outfit is doing and discover other interpretations of the same theme.
Swathe is currently invite-only and is for people aged 18 and over. If a friend sends you an invite, keep the original link and follow it to open your code in the app. The website explains the game; outfit posting and voting happen in Swathe.
Build your first look from your own closet
Pick one piece that makes the theme easy to read. For a monochrome prompt, that might be a navy shirt. Add trousers in a similar shade, then use different textures to give the outfit depth. For a streetwear prompt, start with a silhouette you like and choose the rest of the outfit around it.
Before posting, check whether the photo shows the choices you want people to notice. A cropped hem or dark lighting can hide the detail that makes the look work. Take a second photo if you need to, and choose the one that represents the outfit most clearly.
You do not need to buy a new wardrobe for a styling challenge. Repeating an item with a different layer, shoe, or accessory is a useful way to experiment with personal style.
